The movie I watched is called Queer Intimacies which is a combination of eight short movies. The main idea of them is to talk about the reality of homosexual, and what are some problems they face in a relationship. The first short movie is called ‘The Tragic Fall of Valerie Mallory Finkerstein’. It talks about a young lady called Valerie who is planning on confess her love to Ava at her best friend’s surprise birthday party. The second the movie is called ‘Lost Cat’ which is talks about a lady called Nathalie, she found a cat in her back yard. Nathalie found out there is a lost and found message of this cat which the owner promise 2000 dollars as a reward. Nat just breaks up with her girlfriend, and she has the inability to connect herself and others. She called the owner of the cat and told them she will send it back. When she comes to the address the owner gave her, she saw some people are waiting at the front door, and she is so fearful to talk with a stranger, then she left. On the other day, she came back without notice the owner and leave the cat at their front door. The third movie is called ‘Things That Happen in The Bathroom’. It’s talked about a story about a young queer. In Jak’s opinion, the bathroom is the only place where you don’t need to pretend and be yourselves. You can express your real emotion when you stay in the bathroom. As a young queer, he wants to love. He invited a hook up to his bathroom and show his true self in front of him. He also learns from this relationship about how to recover after they break up. The fourth story ‘Loretta’s Flowers’ is about a young lady who is trapped into three different relationships and can’t get out of it. The fifth story is called ‘Everything’s Great!’, which is talks about a lesbian who is trying to find peace from a relationship and get away from his dad who is alcohol abuse. The lady is wanting to have a relationship with her and doesn’t want to have a relationship with her, and she finds peace by herself at the end. The next movie is called ‘Maybe Today’. It’s a story about a young lady who falls in love with her best friend, and when that happens, how ambiguous would the boundary of relationship be if she acts on it. ‘Amateur Dramatics’ is a story about two actors express their real feelings to each other without pretending when they are practicing drama. The last movie is called ‘Only Trumpets’. Tristan wants an unpredictable meet with his true love. He is an outsider in his life. It’s a story about the falls in love with a man who there are first meeting.
Queer is a term that refers to non-normative sexual desire and behavior, include but not limited to lesbian, gay and bisexual identities. These eight movies have mention gay, lesbian and bisexual. Some characters’ love isn’t accepted by people they love though they love each other. Maybe it’s because homosexuality isn’t well accepted by many people in our society. They are oppressing others’ view or their defined social position. These movies refer to the theory of intersectionality. Intersectionality is a term that refers to the complex relation of gender, nation, sexuality, class, race, and ethnicity, and It also connects with the system of oppression and privilege (Collins 2000). In fact, she views that oppression as part of the structure of dominant. Everyone has their position in our society which is defined by gender, class, and race, etc. In those movies, although every main character is homosexual, they all have their own defined social position, which led to them react differently in a relationship. For example, in the movie of ‘Everything’s Great!’, the young lady has an alcohol abuse dad. He always brings trouble to their family and argues with her mom. For this reason, she is trying to go away from it. In this case, this is oppression which is come from her family, so she is seeking peace from the relationship; however, this relationship is not accepted by the lady she likes. Everything is connected. The differences in their class, gender, and race trigger them to make a different decision when they connect with other people. One of the main characters of ‘Amateur Dramatics’ is Asia. In Asia, homosexuality is less likely to be accepted compare with North America. In the movie it didn’t tell us about that, we don’t know where he comes and where he grows up, but we can guess maybe his race or nation, or even his parent are also the reason why he didn’t discover his real feeling before the rehearse.
Some people are fearful when they discover they like someone who has the same gender with them, and they afraid to share their love. They are afraid they will be view as ‘strange’, especially from Asian countries. As I know, in my parent’s opinion, homosexuality is totally unaccepted. Some people I know, who are homosexual, are suffered by telling the truth to their parents. It’s more difficult for the elder in Asia to accept homosexuality. It’s an oppression of culture and class in intersectionality. They are suffering because they can’t express who they really are. Even nowadays, there are some really bad people will criticize homosexual who expresses their feeling to the public. It’s not someone’s fault, they just express their real emotion to us. They just being who they really are, and love people they love. There is nothing wrong with that. They have no different from anyone in this society. It really needs the courage to share their feeling with us. Hopes we all can be better.
